Ruth Schafran currently lives in San Anselmo. A California native, she was raised in San Francisco where she attended the California School of Fine Arts (now the S.F. Art Institute) and San Francisco State College.
She has always loved the medium of collage. Over the past decade she has focused on creating new landscapes through her photography. All of the collages are created by cutting and pasting the photos manually, a process she finds not only effective but more enjoyable and creative. Color is very important in her work. A simple change in the color of the sky or the placement of a statute in a new location can give the picture an element of the unexpected.
Ruth lived in Manhattan for a decade and created collages on the walls of fellow artists’ lofts and studios. Her works have been shown in galleries in Marin County and San Francisco. She received a Merit Award from the San Francisco Women’s Art Gallery in September 2010 and Honorable Mention at the Marin County Fair in July 2010.
