Susan Merrell

A fourth-generation San Franciscan, Susan Merrell has worked as a documentary and fine art photographer in the Bay Area since 1989. Her art projects range from birds, nudes and street themes, to brand marketing images as a principal photographer for the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF). Merrell has received several photography awards, including: a visiting artist residency at the American Academy in Rome in 1999 and 2017, and grand prize in a Peninsula Magazine photo contest in 1991.

Merrell’s images have appeared in numerous local, national and international online and print publications, including: The Wall Street Journal,, ABC and FOX networks, Bloomberg, San FranciscoChronicle, San Jose Mercury News, METRO Newspapers, the journal Nature and California History magazine. Merrell is currently a photographer for UCSF, and continues her documentary and fine art projects.
