Catherine Merrill
Ceramic Artist, curator, teacher and author, Catherine Merrill’s work explores the human figure and has been shown in over 150 national and international exhibitions. Merrill received her BFA in Ceramics from the Kansas City Art Institute under Ken Ferguson. Other significant influences and sources of inspiration include Robert Arneson, Henri Matisse, Michael Ruiz, George Siegel and classical Greek sculpture.
Catherine has been published in several leading ceramic publications including Ceramics Art & Perception, The Studio Potter, the NCECA Journal, Neue Keramik/ New Ceramics, Contemporary American Pottery, The Figurative ArtBeat, Terra Cotta Magazine and CLAY TIMES.
Merrill has presented numerous workshops and lectures at colleges and art centers in the US, Canada, Argentina and Cuba. In 2009 Catherine was Guest Curator of “Beyond the Embargo” at the Fuller Craft Museum. Dedicated to promoting peace and international friendship through the international language of art, Catherine has been awarded the Jose Maria Heredia Medal of Honor for her contribution to Cuban culture, grants from the Puffin Foundation, the NorthWest Ceramics Foundation as well as the Laila Art Fund for workshops and residencies at the Honolulu Academy, the Hui Noeau & the Holualoa Foundation for Art & Culture. Merrill has been an invited artist at residencies at the Mendocino Art Center, the Kansas City Art Institute, the Taller Cultural, Santiago de Cuba, Instituto de Ceramica Municipal, Buenos Aires Argentina, Kwantlen University College, BC, Canada and the International Ceramic Studio in Keckskemet, Hungary. Merrill was a presenter at the 2003 NCECA Conference Borders in Flux.
