Nina Saltman took her first ceramics class in 1990 at The Clay Studio in San Francisco. She was working as a union carpenter/forewoman/superintendent until 2006, and later as a construction manager for both architects and owners. While she continued to work full time, she still pursued her ceramics interests at the Clay Studio as well as participating in numerous workshops and other classes to hone her artistic skills. In 2011 The Clay Studio closed and she retired from her “day job”. Along with several other artists from her studio she opened up the sfclayworks.
Sfclayworks is a unique community ceramics studio in the Bayview neighborhood of San Francisco. (www.sfclayworks.com) This is the home for Nina’s ceramic work, equipment and artistic community. She is a regular participant in Artspan Open Studios, and has occasional street sales and gallery exhibits, but otherwise sells her work out of her studio at sfclayworks. Her work is defined by attention to details both functional and asthetic, as well as a nod towards funk and gesture. All Nina’s work is one of a kind. Her functional work is food safe as well as microwave and dishwasher safe. All work is fired to Cone 10 in a reduction gas kiln at sfclayworks.
