Many craft theorists discuss the oppositional play involved in using handcraft techniques in contemporary contexts. Saskia van Kampen’s multi-media art work explores this concept through the disruption of printed artifacts with materials such as fiber, thread, acrylic paint and the use of methods such as collage, weaving, and needlework. Van Kampen’s feminist artworks use the techniques of handcraft to comment on the antiquated notions of domesticity and female oppression. She completed her Masters of Design at York University and has had multiple exhibits in Toronto and Montreal, Canada. She moved to San Francisco in 2019 where she continues to explore themes of women, fiber, domesticity, and commercially printed materials.
