Leanne Wood

Leanne Wood recently returned to live in San Francisco. Born in Durban South Africa she has lived in Johannesburg, London, Toronto and Muir Beach. She moved from Toronto to San Francisco in the early 70’s to attend the San Francisco Art Institute and majored in Ceramics and Sculpture. Africa remains with her and is her visual and cultural base. It has enforced her love of textures and textiles, strong shapes and color. Her family’s fine china and her African surroundings came together as a natural dance and is still the basis of her direction. Since childhood she has always been drawn by Nature. Images of women grouped together chatting while beading under ancient shade trees, bangles on men, women and children, crocodiles with their sculptural shapes and gorgeous skin have been subjects of dinnerware, sculptures and paintings. Her studio in San Rafael, ‘Expecting to Fly’, opened with ceramic Ostrich eggs presented boxed with straw and feathers. Sold as an item in stores and catalogs they took off and were well received as new ‘toys’ for display, visual and interior designers. The ostrich eggs were painted in African animal prints as well as a variety of colors and moods. She later introduced a line of dinnerware and decorative accessories for the home. Hand painted and glazed they were shipped nationally and internationally. Lea switched to painting in acrylics quite recently to avoid the effects of working with clay dust for so many years. She has shown her paintings  in Marin and is a member of the Bay Area Women Artists.
