Shannon Knowlton

Shannon is a mixed media fiber artist living from the San Francisco Bay Area. She has happy childhood memories bonding with her grandmother over drawers of old textiles, sewing scraps and embroidering old quilt blocks. She loved learning the “HER-story” behind the pieces the women in her family had created. Shannon has worked with textiles most of her life, sewing, quilting, crocheting, knitting, and embroidering. She weaves this background in textiles into her mixed media pieces with her use of cross-stitch and embroidery. Embroidery was once something relegated to women in drawing rooms, while men discussed the “important” matters of life elsewhere. Shannon’s art is a reclamation. The form of cross-stitch that might be perceived as outdated becomes an act of rebellion itself; she uses the very medium historically used to exclude women to empower women. Craft becomes art, and art becomes subversion and growth.
